Ongoing Activities

  • Community Yizkor every Yom Kippur with over 350 residents attending so they can say a prayer for their loved ones who have passed.

  • Continue to create local political awareness of the plight of Gilad Shalit and other Israeli soldiers held in terrorist captivity, building upon the community-wide rally organized by MHJC for Gilad Shalit, augmenting Israel's grassroot efforts for his safe release.

  • Our congregation continues to adopt families in need.

  • Annual community Hanukkah Menorah lighting.

  • Community outreach program, including the local senior citizen assisted living facilities.

  • Co-sponsor community Yom Hashoah programs with the Mid-Island Y JCC.

  • Founding member of the Interfaith Council of Plainview-Old Bethpage.

Past Activities

  • Spearheaded a community-wide fundraising effort to purchase an ambulance for Israel and raised enough money to not only purchase the ambulance, but supply it with the supplies needed to help save lives. Remarkably, this was accomplished in heretofore record time and MHJC has been cited as a model for other AFMDA fundraising efforts.

  • Held a very special Friday Night Service on the Shabbat immediately after 9/11 so the congregants could gather and support each other at a time when everyone felt threatened by the attack on our mainland. The synagogue was standing room only.

  • Acted as a leader in spearheading the campaign to allow vendors from Israel the opportunity to sell their wares in the U.S. when bombings in Israel jeopardized their very existence due to the drop in tourism.

  • Organized the first local and one of the earliest national charities dedicated to providing much needed respite to caregivers of the homebound. Although no longer an active committee, Caring for Caregivers was at the forefront of raising local public awareness for this much needed service.

  • Spearheaded a community wide rally in support of Israel after the Intifada.

  • Participated in a community service on Kristellnacht.

  • Has attended protests by the U.N. when those dedicated to the eradication of Israel and the Jewish faith have been given the opportunity to speak.

  • Took the lead in mobilizing the community when a teacher in the High School scheduled a trip to England during Passover.
