Manetto Hill Jewish Center has many organizations and committees that keep our congregation active. The center of our congregation is the involvement of our members in a variety of committees. Volunteering is also a fun and fulfilling way to get involved in your community. Give a little or a lot of time. Do a mitzvah. One of the privileges of membership is the opportunity to serve on committees. Each committee plays a vital role, whether focusing on youth or seniors, fun or finances, learning or playing, with all committees welcoming new members and new ideas. For more information contact the MHJC office at 516-935-5454.
Family Life Our Family Life committee offers a wide variety of programming to meet the needs of our MHJC families. These programs range from cultural to educational to social and are directed at adults, children and the entire family. We offer craft programs such as menorah making and challah cover making, social events, couples club activities, trips and our annual Purim celebration. Adult Education Our Adult Education programs at the Hebrew institute encourage our membership to participate in a wide variety of educational topics ranging from archeology to the more traditional educational courses. One of the highlights of our adult education program is our two-year Aleph Bet program which teaches adults Hebrew and culminates in an adult Bar/Bat Mitzvah service at Manetto Hill Jewish Center. The Aleph Bet program is open to those who have limited to no knowledge of the Hebrew language. Caring for Caregivers Our Caring for Caregivers committee was formed in November 1997 with the purpose of providing assistance to a caregiver in need. The committee is dedicated to providing respite for caregivers of the chronically ill who require 24-hour supervision and who reside in Nassau County. The committee provides funds to enable the caregivers to receive a much needed break from their overwhelming responsibility of caring for a loved one, thereby giving them the opportunity to address their own needs for a few hours. Our Israeli and Jewish Affairs committee is charged with keeping our members abreast of the ongoing situation in Israel as well as with World Jewry. This is done through monthly newsletters, speakers, rallied when called for, and a variety of other events. The committee has raised money for Israel and for the victims of terrorist attacks and has formulated several letter writing campaigns. We recently spearheaded a community-wide drive to purchase an ambulance for Israel. Long Range Planning & Decorating Committee/House Makes ongoing recommendations regarding the future needs of our congregational family. Helps make decisions on the repairs and upkeep of our physical plant. Ways & Means Ways & Means is the fundraising arm of the synagogue. In recent years we have held a wide variety of fundraising events, Las Vegas Night, Goods & Services Auction, and our annual Pre-Kol Nidre Comedy Night. Our Youth Group provides a wonderful opportunity for our children to socialize and learn as well as develop a positive feeling of identity with Judaism, the synagogue, the community, and Israel. In addition to our own activities, we also get together with children from other synagogues in the local area as well as across New York State. Our Youth Group is open to children in grades 5-12 through our Pre-Kadima (5th and 6th grade), Kadima (7th and 8th grade) and USY (9th through 12th grade) programs.
